IFC Assignment 4 – Self reflection

Below is self evaluation of assignment 4 which was sent to tutor a couple days ago.

Demonstration of subject-based knowledge and understanding.

Following on from assignment 3 I feel this result say is another step forward from the hesitant steps plainly awful hesitant steps of Assignment 1 and 2.

The context that I have set the essay in I feel gives the reader an immediate feel what the essay is about. I was difficult finding choosing films, away from the recent Blockbusters of the Hunger Games or Harry Potter, and it was through a conversation with a friend that After Earth, came up with obvious patriarchy came up (although I have to confess that wasn’t how we described at first).

I feel I have covered a range of issues relating to remaining close to the Brief to discuss gender in 21st Century cinema, whilst also setting a context of why we are looking at film in the sci-fi/fantasy genres

Demonstration of research skill

Using a range of diverse material, I have structured an argument how Hollywood and World Cinema project a different view of the world and by extension its portrayal of gender and adolescence. Advice from my tutor has been invaluable this – I have a tendency to write “from the heart” without referencing back to wider literature – and it was a constant struggle with myself not to do that with this essay. However, I think I have balanced out personal ideas with wider literature well on this occasion.

Demonstration of critical and Evaluation skills

As mentioned above the essay touches on several key arrears;

  • Patriarchy
  • Feminism
  • Gender role reversal

And I have tried to evidence, with how they are portrayed in the subject film and how they can be interpreted by the viewer.

Communication

Overall, I feel this is perhaps my best-structured essay although I do have a nagging doubt about how the section on why we are looking at the sci-fi/fantasy genre just hangs without real connection, however, I feel it is best to get overall feedback and address this a rework stage.
