About me

Hi, I’m Pete.

After living in Hong Kong for the past 9 years working initially for a UK Bank and latterly as an English as a Second language teacher, for children aged 3 to 11. I find myself now living in Thailand to take a little bit of time for myself and reignite my career as PADI Scuba Diving Instructor and devote myself to my photography studies.

I love photography, and I have been interested in it for last past 30 years since I was a teenager. I guess I would describe myself as self-taught although I did to City & Guilds Certificate in Photography in the 90’s.

I took a break from photography for various reasons, and the digital age of photography took off and left me behind. However, when I moved to Hong Kong in 2009 I was inspired to pick up a camera again, and I have not looked back since.

I enjoy street/travel style of photography. I think this became my passion because of the subjects I took; it was the markets and general street scenes here in Asia that inspired me although, after nine years, the once odd sights in the markets are starting to look too normal! While I enjoy street & travel, this does not mean I don’t like other styles I am happy to shoot anything and everything.

For the last few of years have been working on and off on a 100 Strangers project, that is street portraits of individuals trying to find out a little about that person.

If I have concerns with my photography, is that I am very self-critical; however, my overriding feeling is that I am better at the technical side than I am at the artistic.

I am undertaking a BA in photography because I have procrastinated about for many years and I feel these courses will let me look at my photography from a different perspective and “move it to the next level” – whatever that means.

I have completed the Expressing Your Vision and Introduction to Film Culture units, both with relatively strong marks – much to my surprise! I am now embarking on my final level one course Context and Narrative where I understand cannot rest of past achievement and to use a cliche “step up my game”.
