IFC Introduction: Exercise 0.1

Welcome to my first blog post of Introduction to Film Culture.

This exercise invites us to consider what we know about several cinematic terms and make notes on what I understand by them, and I am embarrassed to say – very little. Below is the list and my initial ideas what they mean:

Auteur – unknown

Cinematographer/director of photographer or DoP – I understand this to be the “head or chief cameraman” he creates the cinematic look the direct is want to active.

Cutting room – the act of editing a film; hence the term of phrase cutting room floor.

Cross-cutting – switching to between scenes give the illusion they are happening at the same time.

The inter – cut – unknown

Deep focus – large depth of field

Edit – suite – where a film is edited and soundtrack mixed

Foly – sound effects produced to enhance those that would hard to capture while filming e.g. door closing, breaking glass, etc

Mise-En-Scene – the overall look of the film.

Montage – a collection of short clips edited together

Production designer – the person with responsible for the overall look of a film

Pre-Production – work that is done before filming starts.

Principal photography – the filming of the actors at work

Post-production – the work that is done after filming has stopped e.g. editing

The above are my initial notes I will compare these and edit upon the receipt of Film Studies: The Basics
