Assignment 2 – Preparation Part 3

Is Time Money?

I moved away from memories of my mother as I could not visualise what I was experience and something else happened last couple of weeks at work, that although I was not involved in, good friends were. They needed to use the first aid and CPR skills and in the aftermath of this I began to wonder about now precious and fleeting time is.

When you administer CPR you count 1, 1000, 2, 2000 etc to mark seconds and every day here in Thailand we see and handle 1000-baht notes (approx. GBP20) and I started to wonder are the 2 related, can you buy a second with a 1000 baht? What is our time worth?

I decided to put together a series of images of money that represent different time period using Thai Baht. Initially the period I thoughts of were:

  • One Second
  • One Minute
  • One Day
  • One Month
  • One Morning
  • One Evening
  • Short Time
  • Long Time
  • A Life Time

For I purchased a basic lightbox to set up small still life’s and photograph the money and present them to show the inequality of what things are worth in relation to our time here on earth.

I have used a stark white background for the images to represent the void of time that we are wanting the money to stop us all falling into, as opposed to setting up small tableaux of the money on bedside table etc. David Bate in Photography: Key Concepts describes how a black background is used as signifier adverting to represent a void from which the products step out from, so I think it is appropriate here as this assignment has come from the idea can money help in out fight against mortality.
